2015 Rutledge & Vine Cabernet Sauvignon
The 2015 Rutledge and Vine Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon holds true to the vineyard, where small rich berries provide stunning opulence, balanced texture and deliciously robust fruit. The aromas of classic briar patch blackberries, with hints of cocoa, and subtle exotic spices are prominent, yet finely ground white pepper hides in the essence of the wine. The 2015 vintage is exceptional and we are very pleased to provide this treasured wine to you.
The 2015 growing season in the Oakville appellation of Napa Valley commenced with unseasonably warm and divine temperatures in the late winter and early spring. This pushed the bud break early also resulting in an early bloom. However colder temperatures in May, during the peak of flower, resulted in uneven fruit set, called shatter, which resulted in a much smaller fruit set and crop in 2015. This harvest was one of the earliest and smallest on record in Napa Valley, beginning on July 22 with the picking of grapes for sparkling wine, and concluding for most all vintners and growers in the valley by mid-October. Napa Valley, situated near the coast, received 75% of normal rainfall for the water year, bringing far fewer water concerns for Napa Valley’s winemakers. Although the size of the crop was minimal the quality was exceptional with wonderful concentration of flavors due to the small clusters and berries. While quality is tremendous the quantities across Napa Valley are especially low making this vintage not only delicious but also rare.
The vineyard for Rutledge and Vine is situated in the red earth soils of Oakville, and is set alongside the picturesque Silverado Trail at Skellenger Lane. The gently sloping volcaniclastic-rich and moderately alluvial soils provide for a balanced mineralogy and nutrient profile with excellent drainage, amplifying this as an optical and iconic Oakville vineyard. Because of the terroir the berries are the perfect size for providing a harmonic balance of, sugar, tannin, aromatics and mouthfeel. Great wines start in the vineyards.
After a gentle hand harvesting the grape are removed from the stems and moved to the small fermentation tank where temperature is precisely monitored and adjusted if needed. A philosophy of minimal intervention is utilized through a passive and proprietary fermentation handmade device, allowing heat to escape and the “cap” to maintain complete saturation. Gentle, passive extraction allows for the remarkably smooth body and texture of the wine with ample aromatics and body.
